The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, including a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
