Ayoub El Kaabi's Spectacular Goal Wraps Up Morocco's Triumph Over the Coelacanths in Africa Cup of Nations First Game.

Host nation the Moroccan side shook off a nervy start to overcome Comoros in the competition's first match on the weekend, thanks to Brahim Díaz and super-sub El Kaabi in the second half.

This constituted a far from convincing performance, though, from the strongly favored Moroccans, who are ranked 97 places higher than the tiny Indian Ocean nation in the world rankings and had to grind out for the points in rainy conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Nervy Start and Missed Opportunities

Morocco failed to convert an early spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at half-time even with controlling the ball, eventually opening the scoring in the 55th minute.

The goal arrived after full-back Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before slipping it square for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass into the net.

“The first match is always difficult but we came good in the second half,” said manager Regragui.

The Substitute's Piece of Magic

Any lingering nerves was subsequently extinguished by a moment of pure individual brilliance from substitute El Kaabi. Just ten minutes following his introduction, the striker connected with a ball into the box with a stunning bicycle kick in the 74th minute, doubling and sealing the win.

Before that, the Moroccan team could have been ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was given for a challenge on Brahim Díaz. However, Rahimi's effort was kept out by keeper Pandor.

Comoros Resistance and Late Opportunity

The underdogs stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods until the hosts' greater quality eventually told.

Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor pulled off a number of other fine saves to keep down the score as the game progressed, although his team created a chance for an equalizer shortly following Díaz's goal, with Saïd firing straight at Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Fitness Concern for Morocco

The victory was somewhat marred by an apparent injury to Morocco's skipper, Romain Saïss, who limped off after the 18th minute in tears.

This defender had only made his comeback to the international setup recently following a year’s absence due to a serious ankle operation.

The win continues Morocco's historic run of successive victories to 19, beating the previous best of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
