‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s road from gurney to goals with Athletic
Whenhe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta featured in English soil, an 18-year-old appearing for the youth squad against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he appeared in England, against the English side weeks after, he scored. The third time, against the Citizens six weeks after that, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, as well. “Actually,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker reveals, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain how true it was, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; following that, the brief trip to the airport and a further journey to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Uttering the name lights him up. This is proving a challenging campaign for the club, partly because of the requirements of their participation. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in four decades. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.
The player believed it difficult enough just to make the first team and he was right. Born to the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured Mikel Arteta, the former star and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he suffered a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, returning at 26 to experience the peak of his career.
“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but every phase you progress through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I tear my cruciate.
“A massive setback but I reflect on it as something positive because it forced me to alter the perspective. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then head home, as a youngster does. At the complex, you have everything, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players countless occasions. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. The striker moved emotionally in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in that season, he got three strikes in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, work, believe, and when eventually a vacancy arises for your role, a return could happen. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. All the more so after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
