A minimum of 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Police Raid on Gangs
At least 64 individuals died in a security raid cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.
Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities stated. More than 80 people were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.
The International human rights organization expressed being "horrified" by the security action, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Mission Consequences
The area of favelas near Rio's airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
State officials stated at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Community members have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.
Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.
Gang Growth
The Red Command group have been expanding their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the raid, along with multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
